Waikato
The Waikato region is located on the western side of the North Island. It stretches from the northern King Country in the south, up to the Coromandel and the boundary with the Auckland Region. The Waikato refers to the long river from which the region gets its name. Waikato is a Maori word meaning flowing water. The city of Hamilton (above and below) is the major centre, with the towns of Cambridge, Tokoroa and Te Awamutu each have approximately 10,000 to 15,000 people in the actual townships and surrounding rural areas.
